Keyword Density

What is keyword density? Keyword density reflects the percentage of keywords that are included within the content of words, which are indexed on a web page. Typically, relevant keywords should be used near the beginning of a web page, in content, and in the title or Meta Tag.

As an example, if your website provides information about pet training seminars, the first step is to perform a keyword search on related topics. Obviously, one of those topics may be about specific breed training. On your web page (about this particular subject), you may wish to write a description about independent services so viewers may gain better understanding.

In your description, it is vital that you employ keywords and keyword phrases relevant to the topic. (This is where search engines come into play.) Let's perform a Google search for 'pet training seminars.' You'll notice that there are over 2 million search engine results for this particular keyword phrase. This tells us that the competition is high for this keyword phrase. But, what if you offer pet training seminars for Rottweilers? Let's perform a Google search for that phrase. You'll notice that displayed search engine results are roughly under 60,000. Still a good return, but more specifically focused. These sites are gaining a competitive edge in search engine rankings. How did they gain this edge? By applying well written content with keyword phrases for their web pages.

While search engine preferences vary, our own research has found that the average density ranges roughly between 3 and 8 percent; with more popular websites leaning more toward the three percent mark.

Figure your keyword density for your web pages. How? If you were to write an article or description of about 300 words in length, you can estimate the amount of keywords or keyword phrases by multiplying any number between 3 and 8 percent by the actual length of the article. So, let's take 4% as an example: 300 words multiplied by 4% equates to about 12 keywords or keyword phrases.

If you concentrate on writing quality content coupled with good keyword phrases and relevant words, chances are that your search engine rankings and traffic are going to improve.
