What are metadata? Essentially, metadata are data about data. Generally, there are three metadata categories including descriptive, structural and administrative. As a managing information source, metadata pertains to an entire compilation of electronically stored data. It may express how, when and by whom specific sets of data were gathered, and the formation thereof.

As an example, metadata are similar to a library directory. Basically, directories may include author name, book title and other pertinent information. Basic metadata includes HTML components and Meta tags and are widely used for XML and Internet applications. Furthermore, metadata are essential to Web documents; allowing users to customize defining tags (including data location and processes, working structures, etc.)
