Page Hit

What defines a page hit? Commonly referred to as a "hit," it is the retrieval of every item. In this definition, one can assume that webpages, graphics or other multimedia forms, (on one web document, but on a separate basis); can be considered as individual hits.

A prime example would be if a user visits one webpage, which contains 16 different graphics. The hit count for this page would be seventeen (17); one for the web document and 16 for each featured graphic. This is also a good indication of why page hits are not as essential as page views; as this calculation presents an unreliable count of actual unique visitors.

The difference between the two is that page views are counted solely toward unique visitor views; which explain why marketers use these statistics, opposed to page hits, in their advertising campaigns.
