Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

Commonly referred to as URL, a uniform resource locator is a line of characters that is used to not only represent a webpage on the Internet, but also to identify it as well. Web browsers that utilize this system of identification include the popular Internet Explorer, Netscape and other Internet resources.

There are a few different URLs, including HTTP, HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer), and FTP (File Transfer Protocol). Within the URL are informative bits of information. Let's take the following example:

http://www.seoadept.com/

The first portion of the address (http) translates into "Hypertext Transfer Protocol." This is the venue that directs users to the IP address, which is seoadept.com.

It is important to submit the correct URL to search engine directories and potential link partners so that web crawlers can properly index your website.
